Panama has a rich history. The
French were granted permission in 1850 to build an interoceanic canal but didn’t commence their project until
1882. The French were encountering problems excavating the canal. Financing the
construction of the canal was becoming a burden and on top of their financial
set-backs, epidemics of malaria and yellow fever took the lives of many
workers. All this together caused the French to abandon their plans on building
the interoceanic canal in Panama in 1889. A little later through much negotiating the United States purchased the site.
Ale takes so much pride in her nationality. Both her parents are Panamanian.
Her father's parents though are both Chinese. They moved to Panama in the early 1910s to work on the Panama Canal.
Ale finds it crazy that her grandparents are so fluent in Spanish because Spanish and Chinese are such different languages.
Ale travels frequently to Panama but is still always surprised when she runs into someone who has recently migrated to Panama and speaks Spanish fluently. She believes that this happens because of the sudden immersion they have to undergo.
Ale loves the city, her favorite museum is in the city. It is called the BioMuseo or the Biodiversity Museum. It is a very modern looking museum, it was designed by Frank Gehry.
Ale is always so amazed by the architecture in the city. A lot of the city is still undergoing construction but it all looks very promising. She knows that a lot of people travel abroad for the ecological experience but Panama City has so much to offer that it too is a tourist destination.
